Uni sparks anger with dress advice for women
A CHINESE university鈥檚 guidelines warning women students not to wear 鈥渞evealing鈥 clothes on campus 鈥渢o prevent arousing temptation鈥 have whipped up online fury.
The recommendations were included in a 50-point safety guide issued at Guangxi University in southern China, which also urged women to avoid going out alone.
鈥淒o not wear clothing and skirts that are overly revealing, low-cut, exposing your waist, or showing your back, so as to prevent arousing temptation,鈥 the advisory note for incoming women students read.
鈥淎t certain times, it is not suitable to wear high heels which restrict movement.鈥
As news of the guidelines issued last month spread online this week, the university was slammed by social media users for suggesting women were responsible for sexual assault.
On Weibo, one user wrote: 鈥淲hy is a woman鈥檚 鈥榝reedom of dressing鈥 deemed as 鈥榯emptation鈥? It鈥檚 mainly because the hearts of some men are unclean. I hope text in the future will say: 鈥楽ome men should please correct their thoughts鈥.鈥
鈥淲omen have not yet been raped, but Guangxi University has prepared to slut-shame them,鈥 another user wrote. The topic had over 210 million views and thousands of comments on Weibo as of yesterday.
