When hyenas roamed ancient Tibet
Fossils found in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau have been confirmed as being from hyenas who roamed the area around 4 million years ago, a Chinese archaeologist revealed yesterday.
The fossilized teeth and lower jaws were found in the desolate Zanda basin in southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region in 2012.
Researchers in China and the US have now agreed they date from the pliocene age.
Li Qiang, a researcher with the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said: “Pliocene hyenas were dog-like predators. Their bone-crushing teeth were perfect for tearing up prey.”
