Worker, 29, tortures toddler to death

A man who was suspected of beating a two-year-old girl to death and lying that she accidentally drowned has been detained, Suzhou police said yesterday.
The 29-year-old suspect surnamed Pei was a construction worker in Xianyang, Shaanxi Province. He concealed his marriage status and seduced a divorced woman surnamed Li via an online dating service last August, police said.
After moving to Suzhou in September to look for work, Pei invited Li to live with him, and volunteered to take care of her toddler daughter identified as Xiaoyun when Li felt sick and decided to go back to Xianyang for some rest, police said.
After Li was gone, Pei revealed his true character, today's Modern Express reported.
Xiaoyun frequently wet the bed and Pei became irritated for having to change her diapers time and again. To correct her habit, Pei started to kick, slap and knock Xiaoyun with a screwdriver every time she wet the bed. He even burned her head with cigarette butts.
On December 24, the girl wet the bed again. After slapping and kicking her, the toddler's face turned from pale to blue. Scared, Pei rushed her to a hospital where doctors failed to save her life.
When doctors asked why she was in such a condition, Pei became nervous and thought for a while before lying that he was giving her a bath when she drowned. Doctors became suspicious after seeing bruises all over her body and called the police.
A post-mortem ruled out drowning as the cause of the girl's death. When shown the report, Pei confessed to abusing Xiaoyun. "I was only trying to educate her this way," he said.
