Youngest academician arrested in funds scandal
CHINA’S youngest engineering academician has been arrested in connection with obtaining national funds through deceit, the Ministry of Science and Technology said yesterday.
Li Ning, 52, an academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering, was among seven academics and a student from five universities found in a 2012 investigation to have received some 25 million yuan (US$4 million) of research funding under false pretences.
Two academics involved have since been tried and jailed.
Investigators said Li, a professor with the China Agricultural University, lied about a program led by the Ministry of Agriculture to cultivate new varieties of genetically modified organisms.
A colleague told the Beijing News that Li is a pioneer in domestic research into animal cloning, producing China’s first somatic cloned pig.
Investigators found that academics cheated about projects concerning water pollution control, drug development, electronic products and AIDS research, the ministry said.
Chen Yingxu, a professor at Zhejiang University, and Song Maoqiang, a professor at the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, were found guilty at court and jailed.
Li Pengpai from the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, his wife and colleague Wang Xinyue and his student Wang Fu have also been arrested.
