Zhou expelled from Party, arrested for graft

DISGRACED official Zhou Yongkang has been expelled from the Communist Party of China and formally arrested as prosecutors begin an investigation into his alleged crimes, which include abuse of power, bribe taking and the leaking of “Party and state secrets,” authorities said yesterday.

Zhou’s expulsion was according to a decision made at a meeting of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee on Friday.

The meeting also decided to transfer the case of Zhou, a former member of the Standing Committee of the Politburo, and relevant information to judicial organs for handling.

The decisions were made after the meeting debated and adopted a report on Zhou’s disciplinary violations submitted by the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection.

A separate statement released yesterday by the Supreme People’s Procuratorate said prosecutors had arrested Zhou and had begun investigating his suspected crimes.

According to a statement released after Friday’s meeting, the Standing Committee of the Politburo agreed to launch an investigation after meeting on December 1, 2013, to hear claims from the disciplinary commission about Zhou’s alleged disciplinary violations.

On July 29 this year, the Politburo met to hear a report by the disciplinary commission and decided to file a case for an investigation.

The probe found that Zhou had seriously violated the Party’s political, organizational and confidentiality discipline, and said he took advantage of his positions to accept bribes and seek profits for others.

Zhou abused his power to help relatives, mistresses and friends make huge profits from operating businesses, resulting in serious losses of state-owned assets, the statement said.

He leaked Party and state secrets, seriously violated self-disciplinary regulations, and accepted a large sums of money and properties both personally and through his family.

Zhou committed adultery with a number of women and traded his power for sex and money, it said, adding that other information about his suspected crimes was also uncovered.

What Zhou did completely deviated from the Party’s nature and mission, and seriously violated Party discipline, the statement said.

His behavior undermined the reputation of the Party, significantly damaged the cause of the Party and the people, and yielded serious consequences, it said.
