Stab waitress had clothes removed - lawyer

TWO lawyers for a waitress who killed a government official and injured another in central China's Hubei Province say one of the men had attempted to rape the woman and had removed her underwear.

Xia Lin and Xia Nan submitted a letter of appeal to the local police at Hubei's Badong County last night detailing what happened before the stabbings, today's Oriental Morning Post reported.

The lawyers, employed by the waitress's mother Zhang Shumei to help her daughter Deng Yujiao during the police investigation, declined to disclose how they gathered the details but said the letter was a valid legal document.

Last week the two interviewed the waitress who is being held in detention.

Earlier yesterday, they submitted an application for a second interview with their client. But to date, they had not received a response from the Badong police.

Badong police said on Sunday the waitress' mother had fired the two Beijing lawyers and hired two Hubei-based lawyers.

The two Hubei lawyers, Wang Shaopeng and Liu Gang, have visited the waitress, who also signed an agreement to hire them for legal support, police said.

The mother could not be reached for comment.

But Xia Lin and Xia Nan have refused to stop working for Zhang, saying they would continue until Zhang told them personally they had been fired. The police had no rights to tell them to stop working after Zhang had hired them, they argued.

Xia Lin published the letter of appeal on his blog on Sina.com, a popular Chinese Website portal, telling what they learned had happened on the night of May 10.

Deng had been washing clothes in a spa room in Xiongfeng Hotel in Badong's Yesanguan Town that night when government officials Huang Dezhi, Deng Guida and another colleague broke in to have a spa after having wine.

Huang asked Deng Yujiao to join him in a bath but was rejected. Deng Yujiao told him she did not work at the spa but was a waitress with the hotel's karaoke bar.

There was an argument and a fight during which Huang apparently tore Deng Yujiao's panties off. She tried to escape to a nearby lounge but was followed by Deng Guida. Deng Guida showed money to the girl and demanded services.

The two men grabbed the girl when she was trying to leave and it was then, cornered, that she pulled a knife and stabbed Deng Guida and Huang.

Deng Yujiao immediately called the police and her mother.

Deng Guida was killed and Huang was injured.

Police took Deng Yujiao for questioning and sent her to the local Youfu Hospital on May 12 for psychiatric assessment after they found antidepressants in her handbag.
