This summer, Suzhou Creek will gradually open the waterway to the public for activities such as rowing, kayaking, paddle boarding and dragon boat racing — part of a broader initiative to build a citywide water sports network and promote public fitness.
Suzhou Creek holds a special place in the history of rowing in China. In 2021, the Head of Shanghai River Regatta made its return to the creek.
From July 11 to 13, “Half-Marathon Suzhou Creek” City Rowing Race — a highlight of the Shanghai Summer campaign, was held at the Putuo District Suzhou Creek Water Sports Center. Nearly 400 rowers from both China and abroad took part, marking the launch of regular water sports activities along the creek.
The pilot area extends from the Changfeng Park Pier to the Danba Road Pier and will be open to the public, sports clubs and youth training teams.
The space will support beginner training, program promotion, youth development and competitive events.
As the main base, the Suzhou Creek Water Sports Center will function as a comprehensive hub, showcasing the history of water sports and offering related training programs.
Although Suzhou Creek is no longer open to commercial vessels, public ferries still operate along the route. Before full access is granted, coordination with relevant departments is required. Public participation is expected to begin later this summer.
Safety measures will include rescue teams, professional rescue boats and mandatory safety instructions for all participants before entering the water.
