Wang: China, US can achieve ‘many great things’ together

China’s foreign minister said yesterday that China and the US can achieve “many great things” if they work together.

The remarks followed US President-elect Donald Trump’s first news conference since his election victory six weeks ago where he said “China and the United States can together solve all of the problems of the world, if you think about.”

China’s top diplomat Wang Yi said he hoped the incoming Trump administration would “make the right choice” and work with China.

Wang said during an address reflecting on the country’s diplomatic work in 2024 and expectations for the future that China’s policy towards the US “has not changed.”

On Sunday and Monday, the China-US financial working group held its seventh meeting in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, the People’s Bank of China announced yesterday.

The two sides had candid and constructive discussions on topics ranging from macroeconomic and financial developments, monetary policy, financial stability, financial regulation and supervision, international financial institutions, capital market, to anti-money laundering and countering the financing of terrorism, its statement said.

Financial regulators, including the National Financial Regulatory Administration, and the China Securities Regulatory Commission from China, and the US Federal Reserve, and the US Securities and Exchange Commission took part, the PBOC said

The National Financial Regulatory Administration and the US Federal Insurance Office updated a memorandum of understanding on facilitating communication and cooperation relating to the insurance sector during the meeting.

Wang said that economic working groups and cooperation on cross-border drug control “fully prove that as long as China and the US cooperate, we can accomplish many great things.”

Repeating a warning over China’s Taiwan, he said China “resolutely opposed illegal and unreasonable suppression by the US, especially its crude interference in China’s internal affairs,” including the status of the southeast island.

“We must take a firm and strong response, resolutely defend our own legitimate rights and interests, and safeguard the basic norms of international relations,” he said.

The two countries have been setting our their positions ahead of Trump’s return to the White House. His first term resulted in a trade war that uprooted global supply chains and hurt almost every economy as inflation and borrowing costs shot up.
Trump has indicated he plans to pick up where he left off, and has vowed to impose an extra 10 percent tariff on Chinese goods.
