Australia coach fines himself over drunken episode

AN Australian rugby coach fined himself 10,000 Australian dollars (US$8,120) Saturday after a drunken escapade in which he tried to gain access to a woman's hotel room.

Police found Brad Fittler, coach of the Sydney Roosters, heavily intoxicated and wearing only shorts early Friday after the woman made a complaint.

"I am disappointed with myself and apologize unreservedly to the occupants of the room who I disturbed," Fittler said at a press conference Saturday. "My behavior was unacceptable and I have fined myself US$10,000."

The rugby club said the money will be donated to a Salvation Army women's refuge charity.

"Police have confirmed the incident regarding Brad, and based on the information we have received at this time we are happy with the course of action taken," said Roosters chief executive Steve Noyce, who also spoke to Fittler and hotel management about the incident.

Fittler's Roosters are in last place in the National Rugby League.
