Baby burned by granddad to expel evil spirits
A SUPERSTITIOUS grandfather applied burning cotton to his jaundiced days-old baby granddaughter's body in order rid her of evil ghosts.
The grandfather tried to expel the ghosts by inserting burning cotton threads in the girl's nose and onto her stomach. The baby screamed during the application with her nose and stomach bleeding and burnt, Chongqing Business Daily reported.
The girl was released from hospital yesterday after almost contracting blood poisoning as a result of the burns, the paper reported.
"The girl could have died," said Wang Yongming, the baby's doctor. "If the burns were infected, the girl could be killed by blood poisoning that normally follows serious infections."
The baby turned gradually yellow after she was born on July 5 and started coughing, a condition typical of neonatal jaundice that is common for newly born babies.
Yet the grandfather insisted that the baby girl turned yellow because she was haunted by evil spirits and could not get better unless the ghost was expelled, the paper reported.
