DNA in thief's excrement leads to his arrest

A thief who has a peculiar habit of defecating on the floor of his ransacked homes was caught because the DNA of his feces revealed his identity to police in Cixi City, Zhejiang Province, local media reported today.

The thief surnamed Chen, 29, broke into a local home in the early hours of April 16, 2010 with a partner. They ate food in the kitchen first and then Chen relieved himself on the floor near the front door.

After their bodily needs were satisfied, the pair began to search for valuables and the noise woke up the house owner. They bolted out without taking anything.

Four months later they burglarized another apartment and took away a laptop and more than 1,000 yuan in cash. As usual, they had a meal in the kitchen and Chen left his stinking signature on the floor near the front door.

Police soon matched the DNA to Chen who served two years in prison for intentional injury committed in 2003.

After his arrest, Chen confessed that he left his waste near a victim's front door as a unique mark. "I read in novels that some robbers liked to leave a mark to show off their bravery and cleverness. I found that pretty cool," he said.

Cixi police are still chasing for Chen's partner, a report on Zhejiang Online says.
