Developer deceives public with money-counting promotion
A DEVELOPER in Jiangsu Province tried to boost its business by holding an unusual money-counting promotion that deceived participants yesterday.
According to a Yangtze Evening News report, the developer's advert claimed anybody who participated in the activity would be given the money he or she counted in 30 seconds.
However, participants later found this was not the case. After people played the game and counted the money they were informed the money could only be used as a discount on an apartment purchase, the report said.
Many people in Jiangsu joined the game yesterday morning in Yancheng City. The developer provided players bundles of 100 yuan (US$14.5) bank notes and asked them to count it with one finger. They were given a 30-second time limit.
A bank clerk counted 11,800 yuan, the most that day, while other players averaged 3,000 yuan to 5,000 yuan, the report said.
However, to their disappointment, participants were not allowed to take the money, but could only use it as a discount to purchase one of the developer's apartments.
A player identified as Wang told the newspaper he had been deceived after he traveled more than 100 kilometers to take part in the promotion. Wang added that he would never trust the developer, which was not named in the report, and that there could be some risks in dealing with such a company.
However, many participants tried to join the next round as they were told they could sell their scores to apartment buyers, the newspaper said. The report did not say if anyone was successful in selling their scores.
