Doomsday believer mortgages her house to help others
A retired senior engineer surnamed Jiang mortgaged her house ownership certificate to borrow 1.04 million yuan (US$173,300) without informing her family and said the "doomsday" is coming when questioned by her husband, Nanjing-based Modern Express reported today.
Her husband surnamed Luo received a phone call from his wife's colleague and learned that his wife had borrowed 70,000 yuan (US$11,228) from this colleague.
From this phone call, Luo also learned that his wife had mortgaged their apartment worth about 3 million yuan for 1.04 million yuan in cash.
Luo brought his wife and their daughter to local community counselors and there he learned Jiang borrowed money just to help children in poverty before the "dooms day" comes.
After negotiations, Luo would pay 20,000 yuan to get their property ownership certificate back from a real estate agent. But he and his daughter are still worried because Jiang firmly believes the "doomsday" will arrive on December 21.
