Freed snakes meet death as villagers defend homes
THE release of thousands of snacks into wilderness has caused panic among villagers in a hilly area near Beijing and some of the freed snakes have crawled into their homes.
Last Friday a group of animal rights activists came to the hills near the Miaoerdong Village in Hebei Province with 500 kilograms of snakes they bought from a pet market in Beijing and set them free on the hills.
Scared villagers were soon mobilized to drive away or kill the snakes. Hundreds of snakes have been annihilated in the past few days, according to a report in Beijing Times.
The activists paid the villagers 40,000 yuan (US$6,320) as compensation and said they didn't know where the reptiles came from and whether there were vipers among them.
According to the Chinese law, people who want to release wild animals from other countries or regions should get approval from local authorities.
Hebei forestry officials have collected several dead snacks to determine if they were poisonous, the report said.
