Man jailed after blowing himself up with bomb for in-laws

A MAN who used homemade bombs to threaten his wife's relatives, but finally hurt himself was sentenced to three years in prison for endangering public security, the Qingpu District People's Court said today.

The 41-year-old convict, named Liu Dong, was injured in his stomach and left arm when a stun rod he was holding accidentally ignited the homemade bombs.
The court heard Liu, a native from Zunyi, Guizhou Province, came to Shanghai to look for his wife, named Zhao Min, who had lost contact with him after she left home to work in other cities in 2007.

Liu said he and Zhao got married in 1990. The husband had been searching for his wife over the past four years until he learned Zhao had been living with another man.
Prosecutors said Liu then bought a stun rod and made explosives from fireworks out of revenge to kill Zhao.

On June 16, Liu found Zhao's sister, Zhao Li, and her husband, Li Hui, in their apartment in Qingpu District. He threatened the pair to reveal his wife's location, or he would kill them by igniting the explosives.

During their dispute, Liu switched on the stun rod that produced electronic shocks and detonated the bombs. He was detained by the police on the same day.
