Man scared of going to sleep

FOR years, a man in northeastern China's Liaoning Province has being going to bed every night, scared that he won't wake the next morning. He suffers from a rare illness – Guillain-Barre syndrome - Dalian-based Peninsula Morning Post reported today.

Xu Qingcai, 40, told the newspaper that he first passed out when he was 18 and woke up 19 days later. He suddenly felt unable to control his arms and legs and fell down, losing consciousness.

Xu once slept for two years when he was 22 and fell in a seven-month long sleep again at the age of 33.

His last episode was a five-month sleep when he was 35, which almost led to the breakup of his family. His wife took his twin sons to her home town in Anhui Province and decided to leave him, but he finally woke up.

Xu didn't complete his primary school courses because of lagging behind on study, a situation partly due to his illness. But Xu and his family, including his 84-year-old mother, often obtained help from kind-hearted people, he told the paper.

An entrepreneur lent him money and a counter at a local market for small business while his neighbors, workers and business owners at the market often offered him financial support or did chores for him.

Guillain-Barre syndrome is a disorder in which the body's immune system attacks part of the peripheral nervous system and can lead to total paralysis. Most patients, however, recover from even the most severe cases.
