Man swims across Yangtze to escape chatty wife

A MAN jumped off a ship on Tuesday night and swam across the Yangtze River during a torrential downpour in Chongqing Municipality to escape his garrulous wife, Chongqing Evening News reported today.

The man surnamed Zhou, 45, drove a truck with his wife, who was identified as Hu, from neighboring Hubei Province several days ago to board the ferry in Chongqing on Tuesday.

At about 8pm, Zhou was seen leaving a cabin with his hands covering his ears yelling: "I am fed up with it," according to the report.

The crew thought Zhou had a head or ear injury and planned to check him but they quickly discovered he did not have any injury, the report said.

At that moment, Hu walked out, chased her husband and scolded him in Hubei dialect.

Zhou covered his ears again and said: "I need to be quiet," the report cited him as saying. He then jumped off the ship.

The crew tried to rescue him but they couldn't find Zhou in the rough-moving water.

About two hours later, police were told a man swam across the Yangtze.

Zhou said he almost died and couldn't have gone one more meter, according to the report.

He told the newspaper he regretted what he did as soon as he touched the water but strived to swim across using the backstroke, which requires less energy than other swimming strokes.

Hu, 42, embraced Zhou tightly when she found him safe and couldn't stop saying, "I love you."

Zhou grew up near the Yangtze and was reportedly a good swimmer.
