Prison break just too hard
A MAN who tried to dig an escape tunnel from a prison in north China gave himself up after he became too exhausted to go on.
Zhang Lei was sentenced to 18 years for illegal arms manufacturing and trade in No. 1 Taiyuan Prison in Shanxi Province on May, 2007.
He began planning his prison break in early 2009, the Beijing Times reported today.
On December 6, Zhang started digging under the south wall with iron bars, shovels and rakes he had secretly gathered.
However, the soil was frozen and that made digging very difficult.
By 4:30am, Zhang was so exhausted that he gave up and turned himself into a prison guard.
Zhang said later that he had considered every eventuality in his plan - except the weather.
As a result, 10 months were added to Zhang's sentence.
