Prisoners try yoga
A PRISON in southwestern China's Sichuan Province has introduced yoga classes for its inmates, hoping it can calm their emotions.
The yoga course beginning yesterday at Qionglai City Prison was an optional choice for prisoners, with 27 inmates choosing to do the downward dog instead of walking during their exercise time, West China Metropolis Daily reported today.
Prison Party chief Zhong Yingmin said the yoga course will last one month and was designed to calm angry prisoners during the summer heat.
Zhong said most of the inmates were jailed for violent crimes and the first batch of yoga students was handpicked from those who behaved well.
One inmate told the newspaper said practicing postures and struggling for balance were really effective in helping him calm down.
