A THIEF suspect tried to escape from a dead-end alley by taking off his pants in front of people chasing him and flashing his naked buttocks on Sunday in Quanzhou City.

The suspected thief, who was identified as Huang, allegedly prized open a motorcycle storage box at a food market in Quanzhou, Fujian Province, and stole a handbag containing about 2,000 yuan, a mobile phone and bank cards about 6pm, Straits Metropolis Daily reported.

The handbag owner, surnamed Wei, ran after the thief with the help of several street venders when they discovered the theft.

Huang entered a cul-de-sac 200 meters away and took off his pants while his pursuers closed in, the report said.

He shook his buttocks towards them, which successfully stopped the pursuers. However, one man from the group stepped in, seized him from behind and asked him to put his trousers back on.

Huang, a Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, confessed to police he had committed similar thefts on more than 10 occasions.

He told police that he heard women shouting behind and wished to scare them away with his buttocks, the report said.
