Are we better off?
FIFTY years ago, Jiao Yulu (1922-1964) passed away, leaving a legacy of selfless service for the people — a legacy that inspired many Chinese over the years but has been forgotten in recent times.
Jiao was the Party secretary of Lankao County, Henan Province.
Despite suffering from liver cancer, he worked hard to lead the people in improving their living environment. He often visited poor farmers and lived in their cowsheds.
Recently President Xi Jinping visited Lankao County and called officials to follow in Jiao’s footsteps, treating the people as they would their own parents. A timely call, indeed.
My 87-year-old father often asks me: “Are we better off now?” I always say “yes.”
But my answer is unconvincing, to both of us, especially when we compare my father’s old days of wholeheartedly serving the people with today’s alarming lack of bureaucratic concern for the rank and file.
When he was president of a major hospital in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, he would lead doctors to work around the clock to comfort patients and their relatives. Nowadays, how many hospital presidents do the same, he asks.
