Cracks in bridge and in confidence

THE idea of filling the cracks in a new bridge with structural adhesive would never occur to a person with common sense.

But that's just what contractors of a bridge reconstruction project in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province did.

Completed in June last year, the rehabilitation of the arch bridge - about 100 meters long °?- cost 50 million yuan (US$7.3 million), Nanfang Daily reported on December 12.

Earlier this month, Nanjing citizens observed more than 30 cracks in the granite bridge railings, some as wide as one finger's breadth. Now there are around 50 cracks.

After concerned citizens filed complaints against the shoddy construction, contractors worked overnight to fill the cracks with glue, the report said.

Ironically, the bridge received an award in June for design excellence by a committee led by the city's Construction Committee, Nanjing Morning Post reported on December 15.

The potential safety problems of the bridge would have remained unnoticed were it not for the cracks.

While the cracks in the bridge may finally be fixed, what can fill the cracks in the conscience of those irresponsible government officials and contractors?

And the cracks in public confidence?
