Judges disciplined for visiting prostitutes

NEXT to the abysmal heat from which there seems to be no relief in sight, the most heated topic over the weekend might be the evolving scandal involving some Shanghai judges.

Video clips posted online on August 1 suggest four judges from Shanghai Higher People’s Court were consorting with prostitutes at a hotel in Pudong on June 9. Local Party disciplinarian authorities acted with surprising swiftness.

After intensive investigation, local Party disciplinary authorities said yesterday that three judges were given 10 days in detention. They were also deprived of Party membership and would be removed from their posts through due process. Another judge received lighter punishment.

The scandal was disclosed by a certain Ni, a disgruntled businessman who suspected foul play after losing a lawsuit that forced him to sell his house in downtown Shanghai.

He later learned that both the plaintiff and the plaintiff’s lawyer were judge Zhao Minghua’s relatives. Zhao was one of the judges seen in the leaked video. Three others from the same court were also involved in the scandal.

Local Party disciplinary authorities have done a good job by acting swiftly. It demonstrates the city’s zero tolerance of official corruption. As Beijing Times commented on Sunday, an investigation into the case will help rebuild public faith in the judiciary system. The paper said that for judges to eat at fancy hotels, visit nightclubs, and patronize prostitutes is inconsistent with the image of an official invested with authority to administer justice.
