Keep young farmers on the land

THE key to developing China's countryside and agriculture is to retain the young generation farmers on the land. Don't leave farmland only to the old and frail.

Farmers may migrate to cities to contribute to urban construction, but farmers are farmers, they can hardly merge into urban life and settle down in cities.

Young migrant farmers usually eke out a living in cities only by selling cheap labor. They will face a double whammy when they get older and lose manual labor jobs in cities but don't know how to plow the land after they are forced to return to the countryside.
