People's reps speak their minds

EDITOR'S note:

City legislators and political advisers are speaking their minds during their annual sessions underway through Sunday.

Zhang Yuliang (chairman and president, Greenland Group, deputy to the Shanghai Municipal People's Congress)

Land prices already dropped and are expected to keep decreasing this year while home prices are likely to remain flat, or dip somewhat. Speculation and investment in buying homes is sure to drop this year. The industry is heading into healthy and stable growth this year due to tightening measures.

Zhong Xiangcai (economist, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, member of the Shanghai Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference)

Too much investment has poured into the property sector, and it will produce a serious problem in the long run. Real estate investment, which only requires a one-time expenditure, can't substantially advance social development. With last year's bullish performance of Chinese shares, investment was also attracted to the equity market, leaving limited resources for manufacturing research and development.

Guo Xiang (general manager, Shanghai Guo Xiang Science and Technology Co Ltd, member of the Shanghai Committee of the CPPCC)

Shanghai used to be a cradle of well-known national brands such as Twin Deer refrigerators, Hero pens and Forever bicycles. Now many of them are virtually out of business, either replaced or shadowed by competitors from foreign countries or other areas. The government can guide owners of these brands to get out of their trap, and encourage them to innovate - the only way to survive and sustain their development.

Liu Ruiqi (chairman, Heng Yuan Xiang Group Co, member of the Shanghai Committee of the CPPCC)

It is high time to produce Chinese products targeting the high-end consumer market. It is not wise to allow foreign makers of luxury goods to monopolize the market.

Shanghai people have developed a capacity to consume such goods, judging from their splurging on foreign tours. And we should speed up our our production to meet that demand.

We have said quite a lot on technology innovation. To some extent, innovation in brand building is more important, because a good brand sells well, and will bring more capital and incentives for technology innovation.
