Wages must be paid
HUNDREDS of teachers gathered in front of the county government building in Luoshan County in central China’s Henan Province on December 27, demanding pay that they were owed. Days before, teachers in Henan’s Gushi County and Hanshan County, in east China’s Anhui Province, took similar action calling for arrears in wages.
In some countries, employers who delay wage payments can be jailed. To be fully paid is every worker’s legitimate right, but tragically, some have to pay with their lives in their fight for such a basic right. Teachers and migrant workers are vulnerable groups in our country, often seen to lack a voice, but they are among the most dedicated in the construction of our society.
For such disputes to occur, there must be something wrong with the mechanisms of our society. For it cannot be denied that the Chinese government and domestic real estate developers are among the wealthiest worldwide.
