A better city is a quieter city

IT is amazing how Shanghainese are eager and attentive to work.

People seem be willing to serve on weekdays and weekends, and even on holidays, which makes life easier for foreigners like me to adjust to the city.

As vibrant as its people, Shanghai is also developing very rapidly. A building under construction seems to rise quite high in a day, thanks to the workers who seem to be working day and night.

Amazement and rapture were the only feelings that I had toward this phenomenon until it actually began to creep into my own life.

I live on Shimen Road No. 1 and a mega-size construction is underway two blocks down the road. The problem is that the work goes on from midnight to dawn, making sharp unpleasant noise all night.

When I awaken in the middle of the night and look out the window, the construction site seems like an all-nighter party place radiating blue light.

Shanghai has successfully handled the air pollution problem over the years. The air has become surprisingly clean, and it even means the weather is becoming more and more pleasant.

Now it is time to tackle the noise pollution. With the adroitness it has shown in handling the air pollution problem, I believe Shanghai is competent to grapple with the noise pollution within a short time.

After all, development need not be realized over night.
