Drivers turning right on red nearly mow down many folks

I FEEL that traffic rule enforcement in Shanghai is too lax and that there is too little respect for traffic rules or traffic police officers.

In terms of general road safety and especially in view of the upcoming Expo that will brings millions of visitors to Shanghai, it is necessary to apply rules and enforce plain common sense to road traffic.

One of the most disturbing things: right-turning vehicles and vehicles approaching a pedestrian crossing ignore pedestrians and bicyclists and force their way through, nearly running over people's feet, often risking accidents, always causing dismay.

The majority of rude drivers honk all the time, although this has rightly been banned for years, and this underlines their rude and irresponsible driving style.

Is this the kind of image Shanghai wants to portray to the world? It would not do justice to the people of Shanghai and to a city that wants to present a good face.

If Shanghai car drivers are unresponsive to education and remain unable to apply common sense and courtesy, right turns at red lights should be prohibited, as they are in many major industrialized countries.

This will be a quick and efficient way to solve problems.
