Lack of rear seatbelts risks riders' lives

DEAR editor,

You may recall I wrote to you in December 2010 concerning an injury sustained by one of our employees because of the lack of an accessible seat belt in the back of the taxi in which she was traveling.

You subsequently published an article on the topic in the Shanghai Daily and the Shanghai government website also commented on the matter.

I am writing to you again as our company has recently had a further accident where an employee was injured in the back of a taxi because of the absence of an accessible seatbelt.

When a truck side-swiped the taxi in which he was traveling, the employee was thrown forward and broke his nose on the rear of the front seat.

If an office of our size has had two such injuries in the space of 20 months, I can't help thinking there must be a lot of people in Shanghai being injured in a similar manner. Apart from the former World Expo taxis, there does not appear to be much evidence that other taxis have installed accessible rear seat belts.
