Many thanks

MR Wang Yong,

I want you and Mr Wan Lixin to know that this Thanksgiving I included among my blessings my friendship with both of you, and for all that I have learned and experienced in the year since I began subscribing to the Shanghai Daily, exchanging occasional correspondence with you both, and even submitting articles for your kind review and possible use.

This past year has fleshed out my heretofore somewhat abstract affection and respect for China and her people. Through the pages of your paper I share some of your adventures, both the positive (the great Exposition, for example, and the very recent story of the rescue of the 27 miners) and the more sad (corruption, scandal, and various forms of natural and human-caused disasters).

I have been meaning to tell you for some time how much I enjoyed your article, "Water music to our ears and our urban hearts," which appeared on November 2.

As usual with your fine writing, it was rich in evocative description. Several times since first reading it I have closed my eyes and imagined myself there with you - I could 'almost' hear the soft chanting and the enchanting sound of the water. I rejoice that you could have had such a marvelous experience, and I thank you for allowing me (and many others, I am sure) to enjoy it with you.
