Seasoned migrant workers should earn more than fresh grads

DEAR editor,

Reading the two articles on the gap between the wages earned by migrants versus those of recent graduates, I was struck by the fact that both the Guangzhou Daily and the Yangcheng Evening News missed one critical point. (Shanghai Daily July 31, "Migrant workers earn more than graduates" and "It's misleading to liken wages of toilers, students.")

A seasoned migrant worker, who has years of practical job experience, should earn more than a fresh graduate who is only starting out on his or her professional career and has little or no practical work experience. Experience counts, that is why most people earn higher salaries as they grow in professional experience.

The Guangzhou Daily article pointed out that in developed countries blue collar workers often out earn white collar workers however, they then draw a conclusion that is just as flawed: the notion that the low starting salary reflects whether or not the graduate learned useful skills at college.

The low starting salary shows no such thing. It simply reflects the "rookie" status of fresh graduates who now have the chance to put all the useful knowledge they collected while attending college to work, thereby convincing their employers slowly but surely to eventually raise their salaries.
