Smokers ejected from No Smoking restaurant

BEING an expat in Shanghai sometimes forces one to seek Western food once in a while.
At the Shanghai One center in Pudong is a German restaurant serving German beer and food.
On Singles Night I visited the restaurant only to be greeted by a smoke-filled hazy room.
I asked the manager why almost everybody seemed to be smoking — even directly under the No Smoking sign ?
She just laughed and asked me if I had a problem with that.
I responded by saying as far as I know it is illegal to smoke in any restaurant in Shanghai and I protest against this.
She responded by throwing me out of the restaurant, telling me I can sit outside in the cold.
Not knowing who else to contact — I phoned the Shanghai Police to ask who I can contact to complain.
The phone was answered after only a single ring. I asked for someone to help me in English and the operator switched to English immediately.
I inquired about where to complain. The operator told me to stay put — and within 10 minutes a police car and two friendly officers arrived.
Even though their English was as limited as my Mandarin — they immediately grasped the situation — me sitting outside in the cold, and the restaurant filled with smokers.
They sorted out the issue within minutes. Smokers were ejected, doors and windows opened, fans started to clear the smoke etc.
During this time I also received a follow-up call from the police asking if they needed to send more officers and whether I was being helped.
I was escorted back inside by the officers, seated at a table — inside — and I could enjoy my dinner and drink in a smoke-free environment.
Even though I assume being a foreigner did help me — I can but just compliment the Shanghai police for fast and effective help and assistance.
