Yangtze pollution visible below aircraft flight path

DEAR editor,

Referring to the articles in last Saturday's Shanghai Daily, on efforts to improve the environment with short-term measures ("Pollutants lessened in air, water", "City readies air-quality safeguards during Expo"), I would like to call your attention to the following:

If you fly into Pudong International Airport on a clear day and circle over the mouth of the Yangtze River, you can clearly see long traces and large puddles of bilge/oil on the surface of the water.

I am not sure if it is legal in China to pump bilge, oil, acid or other matter into the rivers and oceans, however, as a first impression of visitors landing in Shanghai Pudong Airport this may not be suitable, particularly for visitors from environmentally alert countries.

Shanghai is undertaking a massive, all-out effort to beautify the city and make things really nice, efficient and convenient. It would be a shame if this was affected by such an impression of environmental disregard and neglect upon arrival.
