Artificial rain causes storm

LESHAN City in Sichuan Province recently sent fire pumper tankers to create artificial rainfall when certain government leaders were inspecting a high-tech industrial development zone in order to make them appear "diligent" officials.

The authorities later admitted the rain was artificial, but claimed the officials in question were not really on an inspection tour, but the whole scene was part of a video program to promote the city's image.

The "innovative" idea may deserve appreciation, but it can't meet the bottom line.

It actually fabricates a story that officials keep working in heavy rain to improve their image as hard-workers.

Even if the bogus scene is just for shooting a publicity video program, the local authorities are still to blame for lack of honesty. At any rate, it ordered fire pump trucks, which should be prepared for emergency, to assist in forging a false scene.

Promotion videos should introduce local specialties and advantages in an objective way, instead of ever-exaggerating and trumping up the facts.
