Bank dithers while depositor waits for cash
LAST week, a Nanjing bank depositor surnamed Ding was told to wait for two days to get his money back after he said that a malfunctioning ATM had "swallowed" 10,000 yuan (US$1,577) from his account.
Dissatisfied, he phoned the bank again, claiming to have "over withdrawn" 3,000 yuan from the ATM, and the bank sent workers to the scene within five minutes, according to a report in the Yangtze Evening News.
"Our clients' savings remained safe while being stored in the ATM. However, if the ATM gave out excessive money, that would impact the safety of cash flow," the bank said.
This statement sounds reasonable, but it ignores the anxieties of clients whose money has been swallowed.
The fact is that the bank rushes to the scene when it loses "its own" money. This naturally make people feel unfairly treated.
Banks can afford to put on airs because they make the rules and enjoy priorities from the government as monopolies. In comparison, clients have no choice but to accept such unfair terms that benefit banks more than customers.
