Beijing heroes saved many lives in deluge

BEIJING was sleepless on Saturday night, as the strongest rainstorm since 1951 hit and drowned many parts of the capital of China.

Quite a few people grumbled (about the poor drainage), for sure, but more striking was the power of the public in the face of great danger. Everywhere in Beijing you saw people coming to the rescue of each other.

For example, a mother and her daughter waded under heavy rain for about one hour before they met a stranger who then offered to drive them home.

In certain inundated areas (where traffic lights broke down), traffic police stood in deep water and directed traffic with their arms.

Under the Guangqumen Bridge (where a large area was submerged), a policeman rescued car passengers from drowning and shouted, "Who can give me a hand?" Immediately several dozen of bypassers offered help.

Li Fanghong, a police officer who led more than 50 residents to safety, died a hero when he was electrocuted by a live electric wire while searching to evacuate more people.

Heroic spirit was seen everywhere in the historic rain.
