Bribing bosses with US$889 Good Cat smokes

GOOD Cat cigarettes have lately pounced on the market in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, setting off a public howl over the brand's sky-high price: 5,600 yuan (US$889) a carton.

If you're a rank-and-file smoker, you probably wouldn't buy a carton costing more than 200 yuan. Who, then, buys those "good cats"?

Many shop assistants at local department stores said Good Cats sell quite well, mainly as gifts.

Gifts to whom? To corrupt officials, of course.

Because of corruption, you cannot do business, in effect, you can do nothing, if you don't send gifts to those in power.

Indeed, the good cats are not the criminals; corrupt officials and business people are.

Government watchdogs who wink at such outrageously priced gifts are also criminal.
