Catastrophe a 'risk capsule'

IT'S false to blame lightning for the tragic train crash in Wenzhou on Saturday.

Indeed, how can we blame the bad weather and technological loopholes for a tragedy of such magnitude?

The railway authorities should draw a hard lesson: safety overrides speed.

Three officials - leaders of the Shanghai Railway Bureau - have been removed from their posts, but it's crystal clear that they are far from the only culprits. Moreover, the three officials should not just be removed, they deserve further punishment.

While rescuing the victims, the authorities should try their best to find the truth behind this rare tragedy.

Truth and due punishment offer the best consolation to the victims and their relatives. This tragedy reflects a China that is like a "risk capsule" - it contains all kinds of risks the West witnessed in its hundreds of years of modernization. In just around 30 years, China has seen all those risks associated with urbanization and industrialization.

In the final analysis, those risks result from a way of growth that worships things but trashes life.
