China needs small towns and villages
A COUNTRYSIDE should look like countryside, its bucolic beauty should not be lost in our urbanization drive.
In many rural areas, numerous new apartments arise overnight as bulldozers destroy arable land and force farmers into elevators with hoes on their shoulders.
Nationwide, 51.27 percent of Chinese people lived in cities by the end of last year, surpassing rural population for the first time. But a thorny problem is that many rural areas aspire to be big cities, which only worsen China's traffic and air quality.
In fact, a mixture of smaller towns and adjacent villages should be a cure to China's current ills associated with going urban and going big.
