Destroying civilization

IT is a sign of short-sightedness in urban management to clear ancient trees from streets to make way for subway construction, as witnessed in the recent case of Nanjing removing hundreds of precious old trees.

A city's quality has lots to do with its trees. You might be able to erect a new city in a few months, but you can never have ancient trees in as short a period. Trees define the inner soul of a city.

In some cities, officials have bulldozed ancient structures – houses and walls – by force. And now they have moved to take on ancient trees.

These city officials are destroying civilization in the disguise of building urban civilization.

The hasty behavior of many city officials calls for an urgent participation by the general public in urban policy making.

It's the lack of public checks and balances against official power that has caused walls, houses and trees to fall down.
