Gold a heavy burden for athletes

ONCE upon a time, several dozen people - reporters and sports officials - welcomed an elderly couple into a hotel room in a certain county. The old couple were none other than the parents of a Chinese Olympic Games competitor who came from a poor village.

When it was clear that the player could not win any medal, the reporters and sports officials left the hotel room all of a sudden, abandoning the hapless couple high and dry.

That was by no means an isolated case. Together, these stories of abandoned players and parents impart a sense of ruthlessness and make us wonder why we often measure the value of a player by whether he or she wins a gold medal.

Does success mean only a gold medal? Of course not. But in reality, winning a gold medal has become a burden for players and a political achievement for sports officials.

Let's focus no more on results. Let's learn to appreciate the process of Olympics competition and give every loss the applause for effort it deserves.
