Graf, poor tech blamed for grain loss
ACCORDING to the Ministry of Agriculture, China loses around 50 billion jin (25 billion kg), or 300 billion yuan (US$47 billion) worth of grain and other farm produce, due to backward processing technology.
Of the total, the rate of grain loss is 8 percent, while that for vegetables is 20 percent. This loss of grain and other produce represents the loss of food for around 150 million Chinese.
In developed countries, the rate of grain loss is less than 3 percent, and in other developing countries the rate is around 5 percent. Look at China's grain loss rate of 8 percent!
But shall we blame our huge loss on our backward processing technology only? No. The bigger threat may well come from losses or corruption in the areas of grain storage and transport.
Many officials in charge of grain storage and transport pay little attention to the losses. They are simply irresponsible.
And in many cases, it's sheer corruption - stealing grain for private gain.
