History lesson from Germany

DISPUTES over the Diaoyu Islands have escalated lately between China and Japan as the latter, aided and abetted by the US in secret or openly, has moved to "nationalize" the islands.

Why does Japan - its government in particular - dare to challenge the sovereignty of China, a victim (of Japanese invasion) in World War II, and challenge the post-war world order set out by declarations at Yalta and Potsdam? Among others, two reasons stand out:

First, Unlike Germany, Japan has never reflected upon its appalling war crimes during World War II. Certainly, there are still a few rightists in Germany, but they can hardly make trouble. In contrast, words of "regret" by a few Japanese politicians are nothing but a public stunt.

Second, while they spare no effort in attacking any revival of Nazi forces in Germany, Western opinions appear detached from or ignorant of the rise of militarist forces in Japan.

On the contrary, Western opinions are quick to distort facts when it comes to reporting China's legal protest over Japan's provocative actions or reporting China's development in the past 30 years.
