Citizens should have a say in how to balance urban construction with the protection of ancient trees.
It shall not be a business only between the government and the developer.
Citizens are the real masters of a city and they are most concerned about the fate of ancient trees.
But in the case of tree felling in Nanjing, citizens had no say whatsoever.
Indeed, there are regulations against freewheeling felling of trees, but such regulations only bar business developers from harming trees, they hardly prevent willful officials from doing likewise.
Rows after rows of plane trees were chopped down some years ago, when some former official of Nanjing said they blocked the neon lights, thus damaging Nanjing's image as a metropolis.
