Local officials fail the people

"THERE'S no new China without destroying old houses by force."

(Ed: This is the central message of a hot article posted on the Internet on Tuesday. The author claims to be an official in Yihuang County, Jiangxi Province, where three residents set fire to themselves in their hapless and futile protest against the local government's violent destruction of their house.)

So weird is the argument that it couldn't better betray the author's ignorance or disregard of the public interest.

This author, like some other local officials, narrowly defines "development" as the construction of projects and expansion of cities, in total disregard of the people - what the people want and how the people feel.

In some regions, you even see such official slogans as "We will make your life harder if you stand in the way of development."

The central government says development is for the benefit of the people, but in some regions, officials treat the people as enemies in the name of development.
