Open-backed qipao is far from suitable

IT'S time to show your beautiful minds, not your beautiful bodies.

About 30 national legislators and advisers, all from Zhejiang Province, were supposed to appear in form-fitting qipao, or cheongsam, on March 5, the opening day of the ongoing National People's Congress. [Editor's note: they canceled the plan because of public howls against it.]

What did these lawmakers and advisers want to do? Did they go to Beijing to deliberate on pressing national issues and raise local concerns - or as fashion models?

At a time when the nation is facing such thorny issues as poverty alleviation and income gaps, our legislators and advisers should show sympathy for the have-nots, instead of showing off how much they themselves have. It's simply improper to attend national legislative and advisory conferences in the manner of a fashion model.

What's worse, the qipao they were supposed to wear were a far cry from the traditional style. The intended design exposed a woman's entire back, thus undermining any suggestion of a traditional Chinese woman's modesty and reserved manner.

If you want to appear sexy, show your bare back to your husband, or in the streets. Please don't distract the legislators and advisors who sit behind you.
