Plight of rural teacher indicates education gap
SINCE 1987, Shaanxi Province native Wang Yizhou, was paid merely 400 yuan (US$63.08) per month when working as a substitute teacher, though he even lost this job in 2003 due to his lack of a teaching license.
Just one year later, he was employed again for lack of teachers, according to China Business News.
It's hard to imagine how a person can fare with such a meager sum today. But Wang, who is now age 61, has already devoted 20 years to this low-paying job.
While Wang deserves our respect, his story should impel us to reflect deeply about the state of rural education.
Authorities have made a huge investment in education in recent years. But we should not ignore the severe imbalance between rural and urban education, since the limited education resources tend to flow to urban, not rural, schools.
Though demand for rural teachers is great, many graduates are reluctant to work in poverty-stricken areas. Worse, technically, substitute teachers cannot become full-time, licensed teachers.
Rural kids are also future of China.
