Rogues spur senseless acts

AMONG the recent protests in China against Japan's provocative actions over the Diaoyu Islands, some have turned irrational. This offers some Japanese media a chance to gloat over what they label as "rascalization" of China's anti-Japanese-rightist movement.

We can understand our people's patriotic enthusiasm. But can we safeguard our Diaoyu Islands merely by irrational acts?

It is an illusion that half of Japanese plants would go bankrupt if we boycott their products for a day and that Japanese industry would collapse if we persist in the boycott for half a month. Some of us smash our fellow countrymen's properties (Japanese cars) and besiege Japanese people living in China in the name of justice. The rush to irrational actions plays into the hands of Japanese rightist politicians who take the trouble at all costs to make trouble.

Since Japan announced its plan to "purchase" the Diaoyu Islands, China has done everything in respect of international laws and demonstrated its utmost sincerity in solving the dispute through diplomatic means. In defending China's core national interests, we cannot be led by rogues in Japan.
