Snobbish student prefers death to countryside

"I'LL never go to the grassroots after graduation; I'll definitely never go to the grassroots after graduation; I'd rather die than go to the grassroots after graduation."

That was the message a female doctoral candidate sent on her microblog on August 3, after returning from a study trip to a poor county in Fujian Province. She was from the economics department of Xiamen University of Fujian. Three aspects of her message warrant public attention.

1. She was certainly correct to notice the huge urban-rural divide, but has she thought about how to close or narrow the gap?

2. She herself came from a poor rural family, so how can she become so snobbish and look down upon the poor after years of college education?

3. She participated in a summer study trip organized by Xiamen University, but the receiving county, poor as it is, was said to have provided "the talented students from Xiamen University" the best possible board and lodging. How can such a poor county use public funds to sponsor a regular study trip?
