Some officials woo witches

HAVEN'T been promoted for a long time? Install a mirror to ward off monsters on the door of your office, or hang a dried gourd on the door frame.

These suggestions are far from isolated cases of officials endorsing superstition. In many places, fortune tellers, even witches, have found themselves the apple of the eye of local officials who have lost faith in what they're supposed to respect as Communist Party members.

To be sure, fengshui might have some basis, especially in the science of architecture, but witches, mirrors against monsters and fortune gourds have nothing to do with fengshui.

Men are the movers and makers of history. Ask men, ask the people, if you have doubts. Don't ask ghosts.

What officials believe in matters a lot to a society. We must be alert against the revival of superstition, especially when such superstition often involves corrupt officials.
